He has the size at 6’2”, he has a strong arm, he’s got the NFL pedigree. As a Browns fan you’re first instinct is to yell “HELL YEAH TAKE HIM!” and get all caught up in the hype of all the positives of bringing the “superstar” kid to Cleveland because it’s happening all because Shedeur Sanders mentioned his first draft visit will be with the Cleveland Browns. Well duh, of course he is, it’s part of the draft process and the Browns have to show they’re interested in everyone no matter what their real draft plans are.
What could possibly go wrong? If you don’t know the answer to that you haven’t been paying attention to the Browns for the last 25 years have you?
Bring it in kids, I’m about to rain on your parade if you actually think Deion’s boy can save our Cleveland Browns.
First of all, the Browns would have to draft Shedeur Sanders which is going to take a monumental sell job to his Hall of Fame father, Deion Sanders. If you’re not familiar with Deion as a football player let’s just say he was a showboat that was all about playing for big market franchises that were all about winning Super Bowls and back in the early 1990’s they didn’t come any bigger than the San Fransisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. I’m not going into anymore of his bio you can just Google it for yourself if you’re that interested. To sum it up Deion is “Big Time”, hence the nickname of "Primetime", and will not allow his son to go to a franchise where quarterbacks go to die.
But let’s just say it happens and the Browns draft Shedeur. What does he bring to Cleveland that’s going to prove me and some other people wrong? How does he fit in with Kevin Stefanski’s offense? He’s going to have to be ready to start right away because there’s no veteran the Browns can bring in to justify drafting Sanders at 2 or in the top 10 if they trade down for whatever reason. Stefanski will have to quickly develop Sanders to a different style of coaching and playing at the NFL level after having his dad coach and develop him literally his whole life, he really does not know any other way. Oh yeah .. he’s also going to have to actually listen to his coaches. If you’re scoffing at that idea please see Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, hell Deshaun Watson never listened to anyone he had 230 million reasons not to give a damn.
On top of it all, when has it worked out ever for the Cleveland Browns to draft a QB and put all the weight and baggage of being a quarterback for this franchise on his shoulders? Baker came close, I’ll give him that, he was very willing to shoulder the load (no pun intended) but the problem was he just wasn’t that elite QB that the Browns absolutely need. Baker Mayfield the Tampa Bay QB is not the same player he was in Cleveland. He is surrounded by impact players on offense, one of which is a future Hall of Fame Wide Receiver in Mike Evans, and very good offensive line. All of which he did not have in Cleveland.
The pressure of being the quarterback in Cleveland is a different monster and it really isn’t fair for a young kid that just wants to play QB in the NFL. It’s gonna have to be a LeBron James or a
Peyton Manning type of situation. A generational talent that lands in Cleveland and is just too great to succumb to the curse of “Only In Cleveland”.
Shedeur Sanders is not that guy and sadly for Browns fans that guy does not exist in this draft.
